Mom has dementia and is now seeing big black bugs at night. I sprayed to make her happy, but it continues. Any suggestions other than drugs?
I know this happens in dementia patients and there are medications for this but I wanted to know if anyone had suggestions before we add another medication to her pill box.
This is a fairly common problem among elderly. Antibiotic treatment is by mouth and only lasts for about 7 to 10 days. So no long term medication change is likely needed. If "bugs" continue after antibiotic, be sure and inform Dr.
Onlychildbutnot, I agree with the other poster, 97yroldmom, have your Mom checked for an Urinary Tract Infection.
My Dad, who had sundowners, was seeing ants on the walls all hours of the day and in his food. Sure enough, he had an UTI, and once the antibiotics started to kick in, the ants disappeared.
Only, Has your mom been tested for a UTI? You can have this done at her doctors office, an urgent care or even a home test. You will need a doctors prescription for an antibiotic to clear it. It’s best to have a culture but don’t put it off as UTIs can be toxic and cause many problems. Edit: I just reread your post. If this is only happening at night, it could be related to sundowning. I would call her doctor.
