Social security alimony after death. Will my dad get his full amount now?

My parents divorced after over 20 years of marriage and part of my dad's social security went to my mom as alimony (she was disabled with MS). Sadly, my mom passed away in December. Anyone know if my dad will get his full amount of social security now?

Social Security does not pay alimony.

Not sure how it works for a divorced couple but normally both spouses work experience is looked at. With me my DH was collecting 1500 at the time I retired. Based on my earnings, I received 750 already half of his. If his had been 2000, I would have received 250 more bringing up to 1000, half of his. If I die before my husband, he will only receive his 1500 because his is higher. My SS dies with me. The other way around, I would get his because its higher and mine will be dropped. If a woman never worked, she gets SS based on husbands earnings.

What I am saying is Dads SS was never effected because Mom was able to collect based on his earnings. He would have probably received the same amount if they had been married. When Mom died her SS died with her. I don't think Dad will have any adjustments.

You can call SS to see if I am correct. If not, please come back and tell us how it works out.

Contact SS and make sure your mother's death has been reported. The mortuary should have done it, so you can also contact them to be sure.
