Mom is unsteady, how can she can go from sitting to standing safely?

My mom (87) seems to be unsteady when she tries to get up. Of course she says she fine, but I’m afraid she is going to fall. She does use a walker. Any advise on how she can go from sitting to standing safely?

My Dad always used his walker to help him go from sitting to standing. His walker was one of those that had 4 wheels and hand brakes/locks. It was worth every penny for that type of walker.

Once Dad was having problems getting up from his recliner, we rented a chair lift recliner which was easy for him to use. Dad said it was the next best thing since sliced bread.

Other than having her Dr order some PT for her, I would suggest having her get a lift chair. I had to buy one for my husband several years back, and now that he's gone, I find it helpful for myself as well. I bought mine on Amazon about 3 years ago, and it was about $650 dollars, and it has the dual motors, which is important so she can control both the head of the chair along with the feet separately. You can find them for much more and sometimes those don't have the dual motors, so pay attention to that. Good luck.

If this is something new, you may want to ask her PCP if he will order some "in home" physical therapy. Medicare will cover it.
They will teach her the best way to get up and down and the right way to use a walker. Yes, there is a wrong way. It may also need adjusting for her height.

If she is not using a walker to help her stand, she should be with help. When she sits down, make sure the calves of her legs are up against the front of the chair before she sits.

Your Mom is at an age that her legs may not be able to support her. There are many reasons, obesity, diabetes, Parkinsons and more. You may want to consider her getting a lift chair.

In our experience a few sessions with an OT or PT were very helpful with this. Just having Mom and caregivers on the same page with HOW to get up, use the Walker to stabilize balance, and take a step, was VERY HELPFUL for s both.
