Mom at memory care center won’t give hearing aids to staff so that the hearing aids charge. She thinks they will steal them! Any solutions?

We have tried putting the charger in her room overnight; however, she gets up during the night and puts in her hearing aids. Consequently, they are not charged in the morning and she cannot communicate without the hearing aids. Next we tried putting the hearing aid charger at the nurses station and having Mom put them in the charger. This resulted in Mom not going to bed because she thinks the staff will steal the hearing aids. She is so much more confused because she isn’t sleeping well due to the hearing aids situation.
Anyone have a solution to this issue?

Imho, a number 13 hearing aid battery (the standard hearing aid battery size) should hold a charge in a hearing aid for at least a few weeks, oftentimes longer. I am confused as to why the battery is not holding a charge, although the drain on the battery life is 24 hours x number of sleepless nights. Is this a digital hearing aid? Sleepless nights are certainly going to wreck havoc on an elder. However, your profile states that your mother has a "sleep disorder."

There are patient that wander and take things . Maybe buy lost insurance for them so they can be replace. Found dentures in my moms room that were not hers. I have had moms stuff stolen in a lock unit that was never found. They use temp aides that never come back so will steal. My moms small vacuum for her room was stolen . Take all stuff that mean something too family home

My mother-in-love was having trouble understanding the staff at the nursing home. They either didn't speak English or spoke with a combination or such a heavy accent she couldn't understand. She would make an effort then 'tune them out'. One time one of the non-English speaking staff came into the room and said something to me. I told him I couldn't understand what he was saying -- so he YELLED the same thing. I explained I wasn't hard of hearing -- I could HEAR him I just could NOT UNDERSTAND what he was saying. He angrily turned on his heels and left the room. My mother-in-love said -- oh, it's not just me. Bless her sweet heart. Sometimes it's better to leave the hearing aids out.

The hearing aids getting stolen is a real risk, trust me, my dad's were stolen. He had a prescription to have them put in and taken out every day (because he couldn't) and for three days they "forgot" they could not do that because the hearing aids were missing.

AGREE. Everything disappears. Like magic. Only not magic. Hearing aids are precious to the individual and EXPENSIVE.

Can you take them home at night? Let her know you will safeguard them and return them in the morning. Yes some places either lose or steal items it happened to my dad. I had to pay on the hearing aides since we could never locate them. They can be more expensive, the ones he had were low quality mail order type. But more expensive ones are hard to replace. Sorry you are dealing with so much for your mom.

Hi
My understanding is that hearing aids are very expensive. Is getting a 2nd pair feasible?
rhsolucky Jul 2021
Maybe get her a second pair to wear at night that are cheap...

The real concern is you mom's lack of sleep because she is worrying. Ask her doctor for a sleeping medication or mild anti-anxiety medication she can get at bedtime.

wolflover451 Jul 2021
Is there anyway that you can explain that no one else can wear her hearing aids because they won't fit their ears? is there anyway they can give her a melatonin pill about 1 hour before bed, so that she will fall asleep naturally without anxiety? its non habit forming, but unless you can convince her that no one else needs them because they either have their own or they won't fit anyone else. wishing you luck.

Get a fake set to leave in her room at night while the other one charges.

Royneberg Jul 2021
Is it possible to just buy an extra set of batteries? They can swap them out at night and then charge the old ones. :) Or you can buy an extra set of hearing aides.
JustDaughter Jul 2021
Excellent answer. Mom's hearing aids are rechargeable but also can take batteries.

As I'm reading this i suggest getting an extra set of hearing aids. How old the hearing aid are? Can you find out about this info? If so, while the first one been charge, she can still have one set on.

Is a second set or change to battery operated ones possible?

I'm afraid Kantakorus is right - you'll have to go for the alternating pairs.

I spent ten minutes yesterday afternoon tracking down a pair of hearing aids that I could hear squawking somewhere in the room - like a soul in torment - while client and her husband denied all knowledge of the noise or where the hideous racket was coming from. Eureka! - little black box, third shelf down on a side table in the darkened living room, and nestling inside were two brand spanking new in-ear aids. I looked at Mrs Client over my glasses, and she said

"I can't put them in."
"Would you like me to help you put them in?"
"Yes please."
"Can you hear better now?"
"Oh yes much better thank you."

My daily notes sheet read: "please add prompt/support use of hearing aids to a.m. support plan."

If you have a secret second pair the staff can take control of the charging and mother will be none the wiser. Just as well, too, if you ask me.

Kantankorus Jul 2021
Do you have two pairs?
One pair can be worn at night (on flat/no charge) and the other with staff to exchange during bathing next morning.
It seems that she just needs the security of knowing she is wearing them.

One pair can be an inexpensive pair of amplifiers.
