My mom only has Medicare right now. Someone told her their mom has both. Does Medicaid help pay for sitters etc? My mom is on hospice at home. Does it change her Medicare benefits if she signs up for Medicaid?
In the state I'm from you can. I am in the process if applying for Medi-Cal for my mom who is in the hospital fighting sepsis. I was told that if you have medicare, medicaid will become your 2nd insurance and will pay after medicare. We are applying so we will see. She receives social security benefits so she will most likely have to pay a monthly copay around $500.00. She has no other income. She is 1/3 owner of a home so that will have to repay when she passes. She will most likely go home on hospice.
People can have both Medicare and Medicaid. If the person is low enough income but are on Medicare, they don't have to pay for a secondary insurance to cover what Medicare doesn't. That's where the Medicaid comes in.
You have to have practically no assets to receive Medicaid for in home services. If Mom has money then that needs to be used on her care. So you need to check with Medicaid in your state to see what their criteria is.
Medicaid for health is different. Its based on income but you can have some assets. In both, the house is exempt until the person passes. Then Medicaid will try and recoup the care they gave.
Absolutely. In fact most people at nursing homes do. Medicare is health insurance only (pays for doctors, hospitals, test, some specific medical equipment) but will nt pay for custodial care. That's were Medicaid steps in. Medicaid in most states now has other options for a person over 65 or disabled to assist them in staying at home. You can use the link previously posted or contact your local Medicaid office or if you are over 65 call your local Office on Aging for more information.
