How does Aid and attendance work with Medicaid?

My mom will probably end up going on Medicaid after her money runs out in Assisted living../nursing home. I’m in the process of applying for VA aid and attendance . As I understand it, she can get Aid and attendance until she goes on Medicaid then Aid and A will stop or be greatly reduced . I.e. you can’t get both. Am I understanding this correctly?

I just read a article by an elder attorney that you have to apply for VA benefits (if eligible) before applying for Medicaid and that VA benefits do not count as income for Medicaid. However if approved for Medicaid the VA Benefit is reduced to $90/month ….as someone mentioned above.

That is correct. You can not double dip for federal aid.

The AA will be reduced to, if information previously provided here is correct, 90.00 monthly for personal needs. IE depends, hair cut, clothing, etc. it must be used solely for the recipients needs.

Your best bet is to ask these questions of the VA rep who either assisted with the application, or is a contact point if you don't yet have a VA Social Worker.   The VA reps in my experience are very knowledgeable and helpful.   And they know the VA regs and procedures "inside and out."
