Are there any benefits or funding available for those individuals needing higher level of care, while one spouse remains at home?

So, my father has early onset Alzheimers now for 3+ years. He has been living at home with his wife and adult son who also has disability. The time is approaching for a higher level of care for my father however his wife and son would like to remain in their home. How does one afford the costs of personal care without selling their home?

There is Medicaid. What Mom needs to do is get any assets they have split. Dads split will go towards his care when spent down Medicaid can be applied for. Mom will remain in the home with her son and be allowed a car. An elder lawyer should be able to help with this.

The wife needs to see an eldercare attorney who is certified and very familiar with the Medicaid regs in their state.

Any countable assets (home and one car are not counted) are divided and the Community Spouse (the one remaining in the home) can even be awarded some of the institutionalized spouse's income if it is needed to maintain herself and dependents.

It is very important that these steps be taken in the optimal order, hence the need for an attorney or Medicaid planner.
