My wife, Brenda, who has Lewy Body Dementia called 911 yesterday, Has anyone ever experienced anything like this?

My elderly aunt with Alzheimer's used to call 911 on a regular basis and cry HELP ME until the dispatchers started getting seriously annoyed. My cousin finally removed the telephone from her mother's room at the AL which was what it took for the 911 calls to stop.

If you have a land line phone you might think of getting rid of it and go with cell phone which only you have control over.

You might find the Alzheimer's organization's spouse forum helpful as well--they welcome any spouses of people with dementia, not just AD. There's not much that they haven't seen, and they are very supportive. There are also support resources available at the site. Here's the link if you want to check it out. I am sure this is something that they deal with on a routine basis.
I would notify the emergency department, call during the week, the non emergency number and ask to talk to a supervisor. Explain the situation and I am sure they will understand.
I also think they like to be aware of homes that have "vulnerable" residents. It might change the response in some situations. Some areas also offer a Lock Box that the Police and Fire Department have access to in case they have to get into the house.

Maybe move the phone to a new location where she can't use it to call 911? Luckily they understood what was going on. It's probably not totally uncommon.

My mom would have called 911 if she had been able to use the phone. My lesson learned? Made a call to the police department to notify them there was a person at that number and the address of it with dementia. With a call to 911 the police will still respond but will have a very good idea of what they are walking into.
