Issue with my elderly father's ability to sit comfortably...

Having a difficult time getting my 97 year old father comfortable while in a sitting position since having a catheter inserted and not wearing underwear (he is on disposable incontinence pads). He is bedbound at this time but his hospital bed becomes a fully functioning upright chair so he achieves close to 90 degree optimal angle when sitting and his knees are also bent for comfort. The problem is not the bed position but rather my father's anatomy (privates) in that he winds up sitting on 'himself'. His urologist recommended an athletic supporter but my brother and I are thinking that that will become quite soiled soon after putting on due to incontinence issues. Also not sure how to get supporter on with a catheter. Has anyone experienced anything like this or have any suggestions? Thanks

hi!! :)

i hope your father will soon feel better, with good suggestions/solutions from many people.

1 solution (but it would be the most dramatic solution) is changing the type of catheter.

a suprapubic catheter goes into the stomach (hence leaves private part of men free). this is more comfortable to sit.

advantages:
-comfort
-mayyybe less infections than normal catheter
-you have a choice between putting a pipi bag or valve. you can alternate. valve gives a chance to urinate naturally. this is good for the body/train the bladder

disadvantages:
-doctor/urologist must do a small operation on stomach to insert the tube/catheter. all operations have risks. but it’s a small operation
-after, it takes some weeks for the stomach wound to heal
-after, the stomach tube must be changed every 2 months by a doctor. this gets expensive.

hugs!!
