The husband of my long-time friend/neighbor has just been diagnosed with Alzheimer's. Is there some sort of monitor/equipment that would allow her the freedom to take an occasional break to visit a neighbor, or take her daily walk around the neighborhood, but still be aware of what is happening at home?

Ring cameras can either be plugged into electric sockets, or wired into the house by an electrician, and also have two way microphone. They also have a very easy way to temporarily stop recording anything (for privacy). Your friend will need a smart phone (to view the action after setting up the service). Download the Ring app to the smart phone, plug the Ring device in, then hover the phone camera over the piece of paper from the Ring box, which will automatically activate the new Ring camera.
If your friend likes the Ring camera she can add more devices to the house as time goes on. We bought one Ring camera and aimed it at front door (luckily we have an outdoor electric plug near front door) due to a flurry of thievery in our neighborhood. We were so thrilled with having a pair of eyes outside our door (we could see when mail and packages had been delivered as well as the camera showed our parked car and we felt good that we could protect against the raft of catalytic convertors’ thefts, and so much more.) We bought more cameras and feel great about it, for example we live in coyote territory, they easily jump fences, and they’re sometimes prowling in our backyard. We have a camera inside, aimed out our back glass, and I now always check motion on the backyard camera before I physically go out back. Our cameras caught hail falling last week, it’s a once in a few year happening. As you can tell, we love our cameras and now feel more secure.
I am confident home cameras will help your friend (at least in the short term) care for her husband whilst not being forced to be in the room with him 24/7.
What a good neighbor you are to try to help the couple!

I used the Blink cameras when my husband was completely bedridden in our living room, and I had to run to the store or even just wanted to sit outside for a little while. It was nice for me to be able to check in on him any time I needed to. It worked great for overnight as well, as I didn't have to get out of bed to go check on him, I could just pull up the camera on my phone in the living room and check on him. They are fairly inexpensive, and work well. There are many others available as well. You can just have her "Google" security cameras, and let her take it from there.
