What should we do about mail for an out of state parent?

My girlfriend’s mother recently moved to an assisted living. We live in another state but my girlfriend has POA for her mother. When we went online to forward her mail out of state, it made it sound as though the address change would possibly affect her benefits, voter registration, etc. She is not able to manage bills sent to her at assisted living and we likely would never see them. How have others handled this?

I don't see how forwarding mail to you would change her status. Is the AL in the same state that her mom was previously living? If so, nothing has changed and you are not claiming that she lives out of state. You set this up as her mailing address and it should be fine.

You need to call each account and do a physical address and a mailing address. This is the only way to not adversely affect her.

Will a temporary mail forwarding from her old address to our address for two months (so we know who needs to know) and then edited to her new long term care facility adversely impact anything?

Get all her bills online and do Bill Pay. What benefits specifically would change with her address? Surely not her Medicare... is she on Medicaid? This is a state run program so maybe this is what you mean? I would contact her caseworker and ask what they suggest you do.

I wouldn't worry about voter registration as most facilities have now taken to getting residents registered right within the facility and they have voting representatives handing out & collecting ballots. You can ask her facility if this is what they do.

Prescription drug plans can be effected, as can Medicare advantage plans, as they are county specific.

Just an FYI.
