Until you get a tub that will be comfortable and safe for you it might be a wise thing to get a bench or seat that will span the tub you have now. A hand held shower wand or head in place of the wall mounted shower head will make showering easier and safer. Replacing the tub with a walk in shower is also another option. If you have it with a "zero" entry (no threshold or "lip" to step over) later if you need it a wheel chair can roll right into it or using a walker you can safely walk into the shower. An option like this might be less than one of the walk in tubs, some can get very pricy.
"i have bad arthritis in rt [knee], can't step in tub at time, have CA, under doc care"
What is a CA? A type of arthritis?
So you need help physically getting into the tub...
There may be a way to pay (or get some funding) for a minimal tub remodel. Contact your area's Agency on Aging for more information.
I have seen a tv ad where a company comes in and cuts out the majority of the tub's side (so it has only an inch or 2 of clearance) and then puts a pre-made cover over it, then adds a door all in 1 day (or less) -- and I think it was a "reasonable" price.
Here is one I found: https://tubcut.com
They also sell cutting kits at HomeDepot and could probably provide an installer for you as well:
