SNAP benefits and assisted living. Any advice?

Just clarifying my original question - Dad's blind, a veteran and thankfully I was able to get him VA assistance to help cover the cost of assisted living. Prior to that he was living independently, and got SNAP. I figured that he might still be entitled to some additional benefit given his financial circumstances (since learned - no). Funnily enough since he moved into AL I have received multiple notices from Maryland saying if he doesn't use his snap he will be cut off - then I try to call them and get into some hellish phone mail loop and/or am kept on hold until I give up (can't do this while at work!). Finally WROTE to tell them he can no longer use SNAP.

No, and you need to notify Social Services to stop them.

LisaTorres, I wonder if you meant Nursing Home instead of Assisted Living? It is not uncommon to mix up the two facilities.

Assisted Living, the patient pays for monthly rent themselves.

Nursing Home, the patient can either pay via Medicaid or pay the monthly rent themselves, it depends on their income.

How is it he has enough money to pay for AL but needs food stamps?

Yes, he will pay full market value while he has assets. Some ALF cover later via programs such as medicaid; most do not. And this should have been explained when intake was done.
No, SNAP benefits cannot be transferred by someone no longer needing nutritional support to other things that I am aware of, but each state differs a bit and you would be wise to check out the rules for your own state.
