Can a rehab facility force me to bring my mom home if I meet her for a Dr. appt?

My mom is at a rehab facility because for a variety of reasons she is no longer safe in my home. Her insurance has quit paying for her to be there and she makes $50 too much for SA Medicaid. Out of the blue, they have asked me to meet her for a doctor's appointment. If I go, can they force me to bring her home to an unsafe place?

What is the reason for the Doctor visit?

I am thinking it could a 'Family Update Meeting'. Where key players meet: family, medical team members & the patient. With aim to discuss what Mother's current level of function is. Or perhaps there is a new diagnosis?

These can be held early on to plan rehab goals. Or later, at the end of expected rehab stay, to plan what's next.

If acutely unwell, it may be back to hospital. If stable, home, if adequate level of function to cope or adequate care is provided. This could be by family or services.

If home is not possible, then to discuss what other options exist eg long term care.

Jonnilee, if worried, I would telephone & ask for the honest reason for the appointment as a 'heads up' before you go.

I think that is reasonable.

It is not reasonable to mask any discharge as anything else. You would need advance warning, supports, possibly equipment all in place. And of course be willing & able.

That sort of thing would receive a curt 'No that is not possible'.

That would be most unprofessional, but not impossible (there are tales of it on the forum).

Best of luck for the appointment.

Tell them you will be available for the appointment on the phone.
I see NC has various types of Medicaid. There are usually work arounds to place the excess income in a trust if you find a certified elder attorney to help.

They're trying to subtly discharge her from their facility using a hospital visit. Happens quite often.

Asking to meet you at Drs Appt is to protect themselves.
