You will be asked: Is this new? Any incidents such as bumping, banging, trips, being trodden on? One foot or both feet? Is there anything to see (redness, swelling, bites or scratches, bruises, any skin problems, any odd shapes)? Hot to the touch? Painful to the touch? Worse when moving? Worse when weight-bearing? Worse when walking? What footwear is he using?
If it's just the one foot and an isolated area literally above the joint of the toe, you won't believe this but I saw just such an injury caused by a fat-headed numty forcing a lady's slipper on without noticing that her littlest toe wasn't actually inside yet. I asked the lady to make a complaint, but she wouldn't and i couldn't because I hadn't seen it happen.
Or it could be gout.
Or it could be... almost anything. Get him examined anyway, but especially if it's affecting his mobility, and make sure you don't get fobbed off.
Has he been evaluated by his doctor? Are there known causes for the swollen painful feet? If he has not seen a doctor and this is new then contact his doctor. There can be many causes some related to the feet others not. Anything from a bunion, a break, heart problems. So it is important to determine why. Elevating the feet can sometimes help.
