What is a “medical care advocate”?

I’ve read the term Medical Care Advocate in a couple of places, including this forum.

Is that different from Medical Power of Attorney? If so, how do I become the Medical Care Advocate for my loved one? (FYI I do have full medical and durable power of attorney).

It is just another way to say medical power of attorney, people from the forum are from different states all across the US as well as many other countries and different places call it different things.

cwillie, in the US it is not the same as MPoA. Being MPoA does give that person access to the private medical info. But if the MR is not also the MPoA, the MR only gets access to private medical info but has no legal authority to make medical decisions on that patient's behalf. HIPAA is about the sharing of private medical info. Not sure if this is how it is distinguished in Canada.
