Adding a lock to a private room door in a memory care center. Has anyone done this?

My mother in-law is in a Memory Care Center in Georgia. She has been diagnosed with dementia but is in pretty good shape. Mobile, knows our names, where she is, etc. She is there because they allowed both her and my father in-law stay in a room together. Unfortunately, he recently passed as he was much further along with his dementia. She basically doesn't mind being there except for the food (it is too fattening for her 90 year old girlish figure) and other residents wandering into her room uninvited. Especially at night when she is sleeping. I was thinking about a finger print lock where she could lock it from the inside with a deadbolt. We could set it so any print will open it from the other side but would be enough of a deterrent for the residents. At this point, we don't know if it is allowed, if we can fight to make it happen, etc. Open to thoughts/ideas.

My mother's place had no locks on the rooms, but all the closets were locked. They did an excellent job of keeping residents out of one another's rooms, and we had no issue with it.

I very much doubt they'd allow a private lock on your MIL's room. What if she fell inside and they needed to get in? Even providing them with a key seems like an opportunity for it to get lost, plus you'd be replacing that door when she no longer lives there or switches rooms.

I’d ask for an assessment of her needs. Perhaps, the MC unit is too restrictive for her. Based on what I have seen, allowing a resident who needs MC level care to be in charge of their own safety is risky. In case of fire, she might not be able to unlock the door and escape. I suspect there are laws on door security in a MC. Staff should be up and alert during the night, so her safety in a MC should be protected. Why does she believe other residents are wandering into her room at night?

My mother's Memory Care AL had locked doors on ALL the rooms/units. I would never have moved her into an AL that did not allow the doors to be locked for the reasons you mention. It's absurd to think that the residents WON'T wander into your MILs room and wreak havoc with her belongings, and frighten her to boot. She should be entitled to privacy and not being bothered in her own ROOM. If the MC will not work with you on this matter, I'd move her out. And, it doesn't sound like she belongs in MC in the first place, so why not get her into regular Assisted Living where she'll have lots more freedom in general?

Good luck!

I would really doubt that this would be allowed. At my step-mothers MC, she can lock the door from the inside at night, not during the day.

Personally, I would talk to the admin and discuss the various options.

Perhaps she should be moved to AL? My mother is 97 and that is where she is, AL, as she still has her wits about her, she does not belong in MC.

Just a thought!

I would consider a camera to keep track of who is coming and going. My brother resented that they checked on him, and esp at night. But that was the rule. I think a lock for a patient with dementia, or elderly with physical concerns is a mistake unless the staff has an access key.
