RMonique, the older one gets the more tired they will be. Then add any medicine she is taking to the mix, bet there are one or two that have a side effect of being sleepy.
At 100, my dad is either asleep in his bed or asleep in his chair most of the day. He eats one meal a day (plus cookies and candy bars!) and has been like this for a couple of years. When I visit all he really talks about is that he's sleepy and will take a nap when I leave (hint, hint). I used to feel like he used to sleep like this from boredom and kept trying to get him to do some activities but I now think he really does just want to doze the entire day so I just leave it alone. The assisted living doctor said that this is common toward the end of life and she was expecting him to die two years ago. He started drinking Boost a couple of times a day and his weight increased but he still sleeps all the time.
Yes, it certainly can be. I know at the end, my Dad, in his 90s, said he was so ready for the final forever sleep. He honestly didn't want to leave his bed and did it only for my Mom. He did have low grade anemia that he and his MD decided not to pursue the reasons for as he would not be treating any, so this added to it, and I would encourage an MD check up for this symptom, but your Mom may be ready for the final sleep herself, and is wanting only to rest. Appetite lessens as well and it is amazing at the end how little food it takes to sustain life. Do what you are able to do without distress to her, because you are in danger here of the body shutting down systems one at a time, and she is prone to bed sores, and sepsis. Simple ROM (range of motion) exercise even passive (meaning YOU do it for her; you can look these up online) will help her circulation. Wishing you the best.
