Sudden deterioration for ALZ patient. Any ideas why?

My MIL (moderate stage ALZ, 82 yrs) had a fall recently and hurt her ankle and was given prednisone for inflammation for 5 days which reduced the swelling. On top of that she was given erythromycin for cough for 5 days. She is highly diabetic and the doc had said that prednisone could increase blood sugar. Both medications finished a week back but since the fall she has been sleeping all day, not walking and not eating food. She was a very picky eater and now its even more that she is not eating her regular whatever she is used to have and is surviving on nutrition drinks. Its very hard for us to feed her and we are really exhausted. This has been going on for two weeks now. Do people deteriorate suddenly?

She is walking now and the sleep is a little reduced. So its better. However she is still not eating her usual food. Showed the doc but he has given up due to uncontrollable sugar. He says he cannot do anything further

This type of sudden deterioration requires a call to her PCP right away. Are you able to take her blood sugar numbers yourself to see where they're at? They could be in the danger zone and that's why she's sleeping and not eating, etc. Diet is crucial to maintaining level blood sugars, and some of those shakes are high in sugar. So I'd consider this situation an emergency and get her seen asap.

Good luck to you

I guess the meds could have thrown her for a loop. Maybe it will improve soon? Maybe you should call her doctor? Maybe it's a UTI?
