Affordable medical transportation between states?

I need my dad transferred from rehab in PA to my home in SC. I got two quotes from medical transportation companies and they are both over $5,000. Putting him in a car for 10 hours is not possible. He had a stroke and can't sit up without a wheelchair plus is sometimes incontinent.

Does anybody have experience or suggestions that will not bankrupt us?

Thanks in advance, Christina

ravengal99: Perhaps it's worth checking to see if his medical insurance would cover any or a portion of this.

I agree rent a big vehicle and have others go with you. Does he require medical staff to go with him? Will insurance help?

We had to medi flight hubby from Washington state to Kansas. Insurance paid the $352,000.00 bill.

Did you have special insurance for transportation or was this your medical insurance?

Do a search for "air ambulance," ask if they accept Medicare or any other insurance.

Hi, Christina!..I just went through this a month ago. I moved my mother from TN to TX..she is bed-ridden, has no mobility with contractures to her lower extremities. We opted for renting a minivan..the third row was used for diaper changing , but she was mostly comfortable sitting up ..mini vans have the captain chairs which helped with extra support of pillows all around...12 hr drive turned into 16 with diaper changing but we got there. I had to have 2 other ppl with me for the trip and we all rotated on driving and diaper changing. I didnt pay more than $500 for the rental and gas. Chrysler Pacifica was great! Hope this helps!

I would say it is a bargain.. he should be using his money, but consider this an investment in your time and peace of mind if you have to pay

I have scene this question on this forum more than a few times. An option is for you to rent an ADA accessible RV and then hire someone who is medically qualified to assist with him on the trip. Medical transport is very expensive.

Rent an RV? Make.sure his insurance will follow him.
