Pneumonia vaccine for elderly. Any suggestions?

My dad is 89 and at his recent wellness visit he was offered the pneumonia vaccine but was told it was up to him. He has only mild cognitive impairment but speaks and moves a bit slowly. They did not remind us at the end of the appointment and I actually forgot about it until we got home. At that time it suddenly dawned on me that they probably did not "push" it because of his age and condition. Have others had a similar experience?

The vaccine is not on a time schedule like the flu vaccine. Next time remember to ask for it

My mother never had a flu shot, either have I. But I said OK to a pneumonia shot when asked. Even though she had Dementia, I did not want her dying from pneumonia when I could have prevented it.

It killed my 89 year old Aunt. Her arm swelled and she passed away.

The truth is that once pneumonia was called "The old person's friend", that being because it would finally take them from the vagaries and travails of an ever more difficult life. In this our times health care professionals are hesitant to do more than mouth the recommendations of science; people are quite adamant usually in what they want and what they do not want in terms of vaccines and protection. That is just my guess on the matter tho I am certain it is a good deal more complex.

Wilmore6, our doctor always recommends the pneumonia vaccine and later on the booster.

Pneumococcal vaccines are vaccines against the bacterium Streptococcus pneumoniae. Their use can prevent some cases of pneumonia, meningitis, and sepsis.

My parents lived into their mid to late-90's, had mild dementia, and a hand full of other age related issues, and their doctor made sure they were up-to-date with their pneumonia shots.

Doctors also recommend the whooping cough shot.... the Hep B shot.... Shingle shot... Covid 4 boosters.... and flu shot. Thus, other shots your Dad should think about if he is able to take those vaccines.
