Alternative to Seroquel?

I really do not like trying my dad on seroquel again. Neurologist wants to try full 25 mg at night for sleep instead of Trazadone. The later seems to work some nights then not at all on another night.

He had side effects like tremors, restlessness, and more hallucinations on just a small piece of seroquel. What could I ask the doctor to give him as alternative? Like not anti-psychotic medicine.

He needs something for the daytime as well just to calm/relax him. Doc wanted to try this first then another medication memantine. Which I don't understand as he is in late stage.

Everyone responds differently to meds. My mom did very well with a combination of Ativan and Seroquel.

I hope that you are able to find a viable solution soon. The only other thing that I can think of recommending is to speak with your pharmacist. They are knowledgeable about meds and may be able to suggest certain medications to ask your dad’s doctor about.

Best wishes to you and your dad.

Seroquel was a nightmare for us! My husband, age 81, took it for only a few days, and became aggressive, violent, angry. Neurologist told me to reduce amount given. I said I was not going to give it to him at all. I asked for a small dose of Ativan. She refused. Our Primary Physician did agree to .5 mg of Ativan, which helped for agitation, but also made him lethargic and sleeping more. However, we have now begun him on gummies for agitation, which we bought at the dispensary. I had a phone consult with our Primary first. Asked if I could give my husband CBD. He said he could not give me a prescription for it, but that it would not hurt him. Went to the dispensary. Got a lot of information and advice. Started him on a recommended gummy, and it has been a lifesaver! He's smiling again. Speech is a bit better, although still very compromised. Eating better. Definitely in a happier mood. No outbursts or temper tantrums.
