Can a resident keep a small refrigerator in their room?

Annabelle18 Jul 2023
Depends on the type of facility they are in and/or whether the facility management and contract spell this out. Some AL have small refrigerators in their rooms, some don't. I haven't seen any nursing homes that allow such appliance in their rooms. In an AL, the question would be if it was a refrigerator, who has the responsibility to make sure that it is cleaned out consistently/properly, who will bear the cost of repair/replacement, and if the small refrigerator does have a ice storage area, what about if there is a power outage and the ice melts. Also, many AL desire their residents to meet in the dining area - just to be able to get out of their isolated rooms and interact with others.
So, bottom line, check with the facility and read the contract.

Facility regulations vary. Confer with facility administration.

scottymags32: Perhaps your question is best posed to the resident's facility.

Ask the home.

My sister just put one in my dads MC room. I think it’s a horrible idea and I think my sister is an idiot. He knows how to / where to get what he needs. This will interrupt his routine. Also, we WANT him leaving his room for things. My mother is rotting in her AL apartment in the same building. Dad is doing just fine in his MC room engaging in life.

My husband's Assisted Living and Memory Care rooms came with refrigerators. Other appliances are safety hazards and were not allowed. My suggestion is either ask the facility where your LO resides or do as others have suggested--just do it then ask for forgiveness.

My mom had a small frig in her room at Assisted Living for 3 years. They did not mention rules about a frig in contract, so we just put one in and hoped it was ok. Turned out they accepted it, though mom was the only resident with a frig, as long as they kept a frig thermometer in it, and kept a log of weekly temperature checks. Sometimes it's better to just do something and apologize later, rather than wait for them to approve a new request.

My moms Mc allows for a frig. No microwave or heater or electric blanket of course. It is good because mom likes her cold ensure and yogurts. She doesn’t like to leave her room so if a resident gets lost and comes to her room, she will tell the person to leave. She has vascular dementia but is prone to wander at times. She is able to toilet and knows when she is hungry. I am glad for the frig

Mom has been in LTC since Feb. and have not seen a small fridge in shared rooms. Maybe in single-occupant rooms, but certainly ask management.

I would ask your facility this. At my brother's ALF this was fine as long as it was seen by the electrician checking the plug.

This is a question for the facility they are in. In LTC facilities I have never seen small refrigerators in the rooms. There really is not enough room. Assisted livings usually provide a frig and microwave.
