If your Dad was like mine, he was given an envelope with his discharge papers. My Dad still had the envelope. His type written discharge papers were there and one that can be framed. The typed ones are what are going to be needed. He has a card saying he was entitled to benefits. Another one for his wallet saying he was a Vet.
Take the whole thing with you when you go to the VA. Your Dad maybe entitled to Aid & Attendance if he has Medical problems or needs care in the home or an AL.

(every County has at least 1 office) Or you can contact (your State) Veteran's Service Officer. Or contact the closest VA. If you have all your dad's information that will help but it is not necessary they can get the info. The only "glitch" might be in getting all his records could be if they were destroyed in a fire. There was a fire in a suburb of St. Louis at the National Personnel Records Center. Records for 80% of those discharged between Nov 1, 1912 and Jan 1, 1960 were destroyed. Even without all his records he would qualify for benefits.
