Excessive sleeping.

I recently took my husband to see his family back East. While there, he slept most of each day and night. Now that we are back, he is still sleeping most of the day. He has bad headaches and I’m wondering if he is sleeping due to the pain or if this is a new development in his illness. He has Alzheimer’s but likely CTE from football. Is it common for people in the middle stages to sleep excessively?

He could be progressing. I'd consider getting him to his PCP and get some blood work done. If you see that this a downturn, maybe it's time for a hospice eval? Could he be depressed? Maybe the trip was too much for him and he withdrew?

Good luck.

Interesting. I will ask his doc about the blood work. It could have been too much for him to travel. This will likely be our last trip. Thanks.

As an assisted living caregiver, I have seen this behavior in some mid-stage dementia patients. Daytime is one long nap, interrupted by meals - no interest or involvement in any activities.

Excessive sleeping usually comes when ones body is getting ready to transition from this life to the next.
I would talk to his doctor about this to rule out other things, but perhaps it's time to bring hospice on board.
