How do I get long term care insurance activated for my sister with Alzheimer’s?

My 80 y/o sister has Alzheimer’s. She lives independently in a retirement community near me and caregivers come in daily from 10-2 and 5-8. She’s ok overnight so far and functioning fine physically. She has no short term memory left and doesn’t cook or care for herself without assistance. We have applied for her long term care insurance but after the interview she was declined because she can toilet, dress, etc. No accounting for the dementia she is experiencing. Anyone else have success getting the insurance their LO has paid for over many years?

My 89 year old mother has dementia and is in Memory Care which is completely funded by her long term insurance. Get a doctor's diagnosis asap and that should be sufficient for the insurance company to revaluate!

I would ask to see the exact terms of the policy, in writing. Review closely and see if there's anything you can challenge. Insurance companies make money by NOT paying so they're going to try to say no. Can she actually toilet and dress without any assistance? I wonder if they observed these behaviors or if your sister said she could do them so they just took her word for it?

Does she have an official diagnosis of dementia? If not, get her one. Next question would be if she has been declared incompetent? If not, follow up on that as well. Are you her POA?

Good luck.
