Any suggestions on care for my 50-year-old son in a coma?

Non responsive. Requires tube feeding. I have no help. Any suggestions would be most welcome.

Tell your son's doctors, hospitals, rehabs or caseworkers of your need for help. They can refer you. You may have to come to some conclusions about how long you might be able to continue this 24/7 caregiving. Given your son's dire medical condition I know you will have medical contacts to reach out to and I wish you the very best of luck.

Have you tried getting help through Medicaid? It would be based on your sons income not yours. If son is 50, you must be in your 70s. If it were me, I would not be doing this kind of care and I am 74. Medicaid will pay for your son to be in skilled nursing.

There were patients much like you describe your son in my mother’s nursing home. Much like my mother, their caregiving needs far exceeded what could be safely accomplished in a home setting. It truly took a team of professionals around the clock to meet the needs. Unless your son will be recovering soon, I don’t see any possibility of you keeping this up. Your own health will falter, and then who will he have to advocate for him? Please consider this carefully. My mother used Medicaid when her financial resources ran out, your son could also. Please seek further advice from your son’s doctor and a social worker on the best living arrangements for you both

So sorry for your situation. How long has your son been in a coma? Is he living in your home? Is there any likelihood of him recovering? It sounds like a lot to deal with at home alone.

He needs Medicaid in a SNF. A single caregiver with no financial resources seems unsafe for both
