When my mother fell one time I watched a firefighter squeeze the space between the neck and the shoulder on her and she winced in pain. He said to me - she is having trouble with verbal but this is how we can tell if she can respond to a pain question. Touch where you think they may be in pain and if you hear a moan then you will know. I found it was cheaper for dad to pay for the facility care for my dad. Then when it came, after he had passed, the amount could take it off his taxes because it was medical expense.
Normally, a loved one will have have hospice services coming into the home, if thats where they live, since Medicare only pays 7 days room and board in a hospice facilty. If Medicaid is the provider, I don't know the rules. My folks lived in Assisted Living so hospice saw to them there and there was no need for a different facility.
If your loved one has lost their facial expressions, the hospice nurse (or you) can tell if they're in pain if there's a sharp increase in normal blood pressure along with rapid/shallow breathing.
Pain is often manifested in moaning with movement, grimacing. Also any restlessness.
Hospice will need to be ordered by the doctor. Once that is done and you go through the interview process with recommended agencies you will have ALL of your questions answered by the Hospice team. Begin to make a list of your questions now.
