My mother received social security check first of the month in October. She passed away oct 7th. The government took that payment back. I thought October social security check was payment for September. Am I wrong?
"Yes, you do (have to return the money). It’s a little confusing but not hard to figure out if you remember two things: Social Security benefits are paid a month behind. April’s benefits are paid in May, May’s in June, and so on. Social Security regulations require that a person live an entire month to receive benefits for that month."
Mom passed 10/7. The check she received in her acct in October is Septembers payment. She was alive in Sept. She will not receive her Nov payment because she passed in October. This error has been made before by SS. They need to pay it back.
