My 90-year-old dad recently suffered an IVH. After 10 days he was given an NG tube.Can the NG tube cause unnecessary stress to his heart?

I don't understand why Hospice has not been suggested. Such a hemorrhage is almost always lethal. Your father cannot eat. And NG tube is refused on all my advanced directive papers, so yes, I know exactly what they can do. They can prolong a life of torture and misery when the end is near. I am very sorry family made a choice to agree to such a thing. As to it harming his heart? His heart is likely near failure. If it does fail it won't be because of the introduction of liquid nourishment through a tube feeding. As I said, that is only going to prolong his life, and in that manner prolong his misery.

I hope your family will consider merciful comfort care and discuss Hospice with all doctors involved. If they have not suggested Hospice to the family I as a nurse feel they are being negligent in their duty to their patient.

I am so sorry, but Dad has too much wrong with him. Usually by the time someone is Dads age with all these health problems, tube feeding should not be given. Does he not have a living will, a healthcare proxy? I too think you are prolonging the inevitable. I would be surprised if Dad would bounce back from all that is going on. Pneumonia is a main killer in the elderly. They are good until they aren't. At Dads age, if he does survive all this, will not be the same.

I would call Hospice in to evaluate. If Dad was showing signs of not being able to swallow, that was the first sign that the body was shutting down.

I am strongly against Tube feeding. As the body shuts down it can not process food. The result is the food that is forced into the stomach will either remain in the stomach "fermenting/rotting" causing discomfort. If the food is processed it may remain in the colon or intestines longer than it should also resulting in "fermenting/rotting" both possibilities may require surgery to correct and the possibility of surviving surgery at that point is slim. (if surgery is survived the body probably can not repair itself so healing is not likely)
The body knows when food and fluids are no longer necessary and not eating or drinking does not cause the same feelings in a dying person as you or I experience hunger or thirst.

I would have the tubes removed, this includes any IV's and have Hospice take over his care.

I fail to understand your twisted question. Dad has multiple comorbidities. Any of which can kill him. If the NG tube is removed, then he gets no nutrition or water which also will kill him in a matter of days. He is in a coma and cannot eat or drink. Why can you not see this? He is facing the rest of his life in a nursing home and probably is suffering. Can you not see his quality of life? It might be best to seek a hospice consult. You may have already been asked this question and turned it down.
