Further questions about not having husband discharged yet.

Glad all went ok. For future reference , if hospitalized for rehab and its Medicare coverage, there is a Medicare system to appeal the length. I tried this for my dad (although they did not extend the stay, but he got 2 extra days in rehab while waiting for the appeal decision). THe hospital social worker did proactively tell me about the appeal option.

husband came home the day after I wrote my question and apparently has no problem tho he will not walk as much as i think he should. He says he feels ok.

It’s more than before tho.

i have a feeling that he could have stayed “forever” and id still be concerned for his safety.

anyway hes home and has seen a cardiologist, takes meds (he had a pulmonary embolism), had a blood test and chest xray and is set up for an echocardiogram and stress test.

so he’ll either be better … or worse.

i keep telling myself hes like everyone else since who knows whats wrong with anyone if we cant see it or if they feel ok till they dont.

for myself … i went to the er that same day as the note. I had covid too. Was given a script for paxlovid but the hospital pharmacy was closed and since i had a great parking space i decided to wait to fill it at another pharmacy.

The next day the hospital pharmacy had none and since most regular pharmacies were closed decided to forget it … i was past the time i needed to take it in anyway.

so we came home and life goes on.

He is in a Hospital? Then yes they can release him because Hospital's rarely do Rehab. Some of the large ones do. Where I live, patients go from the Hospital to Rehab. If not Rehab then "in home" is set up. Medicare determines how long someone stays in the Hospital.

You just need to be adamate that you can not care for him at home if he can't walk. Don't let them tell you you can get help. Once u walk him out that door, their responsibility to you is done. Your on ur own.

I'm not sure a hospital will delay discharge in order to just "hold" someone... you may need to talk to the hospital social worker to see if he can go directly into a facility, temporarily.

Ah, I see from your other question that he's still in the hospital.

Betsy, I'm going to suggest that you get yourself to the ER and find out what's going on with YOU. Put a call into discharge planning and let them know that your husband is going to need to be able to care for himself if discharged, because you are currently in the hospital and unable to assist him in any way.

ask Social worker, if not then ombudsman. THere may well be an appeal process. I know in a rehab hospital, there is a formal Medicare appeal process. I'm not sure what type of discharge your husband is facing, but there may well be a prompt and quick Medicare appeals process
