Nursing home/rehab.

My mother has been in for rehabilitation for a week now. She was in the hospital for 2 weeks so was very weak and went here. She’s doing so much better being out but she’s only had PT 3 times so far and today it was a 15 minute ride on the bike and sent back to her room. Few of the team called me today for a conference call and asked if i I had any questions so I asked about the 15 minute ride. They seemed completely offended I asked such a thing. Like am I crazy. Being admitted and having to stay for rehabilitation seems like they would do more.

PT and/or OT usually is at least 30 minutes. Usually the bike ride is pared with a walk or some other exercise for the arms and legs.

I found My brother did ok in rehab and went to group therapy - it was a great rehab . My Mom was in and Out of about 4 rehabs - One was called Spaulding she loved the attention . The other 2 were not so good and one actually had a Lot of Alzheimers and dementia people . Unbeknownst to me she had dementia But I was Not healthcare Proxy . The fourth One she just went down Hill and did not do any PT and was delusional But they kept saying " she was independent ? " Nothing further from the truth . Use your Intuition . I knew My Dad would do terrible in a hospital Like setting and did In home therapy and it worked . The doctor can write a script - PT comes in 4 times a week, you get a VNA nurse and a CNA for bathing and medical equipment - medicare covers this .

Did you witness her 15 minute ride yourself?
I can only respond by sharing that when my late husband had his massive stroke at the age of 48(back in 1996)he was in rehab every day and I made sure that I accompanied him to his 1 hour sessions. And what I had witnessed at that time were older folks being wheeled in in their wheelchairs and left to sit for the entire hour without any PT being done at all for them.
In retrospect now I'm guessing because I was there, that they made sure my husbands PT and OT was being done. Plus the fact that he was only 48 perhaps too might have made a difference, I don't know.
But it is a shame that some rehabs don't do what they're supposed to do, as I witnessed first hand.

It's the exact opposite at the rehab at this facility. All the therapists are rock stars who really try hard to get those who need PT and/or OT to participate. You may be surprised ( or not) that many refuse to do one the other or both.

The lady mentioned in the other post about the call light, crying, etc was like this. She had a great therapist who did all he could to get her to do it, but she didn't, and was discharged from it. Now, she whines about being out to bed, when doing therapy she probably would have gained enough leg strength to do it herself.

PT and OT, though painful sometimes, can be fun, especially when you start to see the results of your hard work.

Rehab is usually every day. Once in the morning, once in the afternoon. One is PT the other OT. They even do it on weekends. I would tell them she needs to be up to par by the 20th day because there is no money to pay the 50% mom will be responsible for. Unless she has very good secondary insurance. My Mom didn't and she was out in 18 days. I was told, if rehab is just for getting a persons strength back, its 3 days of therapy for every one in the hospital. So ur Mom should be in no more than 42 days. 22 of which Medicare only pays 20 days.

If you are not satisfied with this rehab, check out another one. Or request in home therapy.

Who is telling you this about how often PT is occuring.

So they -- the PT folk--were completely offended.
What did they tell you when you said that she only got that reported amount of PT?
