My husband is partially disabled from 4 back surgeries, a total hip and soon another hip surgery. In Gr8 pain and has begun using alcohol. Ideas?

Speak to the doctor and ask for pain control consult with a specialist. Tell the doctor that your husband is self medicating with alcohol because his pain isn't being addressed adequately. Begin to be ready to file for grievance against medical system if medications are not provided. Be certain that things are documented and scanned into the chart.

Maybe he is depressed. Has he ever mentioned this or been assessed? Chronic physical pain can certainly cause depression.

I suppose that he is self medicating with the booze. How much is he drinking?

I’m sorry that he’s suffering. It’s hard for him and hard for you to watch.

No one would ever sign on for back pain. But hopefully by being honest about his pain, his limitations, his depression & alcohol use, your Husband can make some good plans to improve things.

Alcohol use for 'medicine' is a coping strategy. Most Doctors would have seen this before.

Would he be open to discussing his situation with his Primary Doctor?
