Mike, if you were living in my city, San Francisco, I would caution you that you likely cannot. The waiting list for affordable housing is so long you would be dead before you qualified. I would suggest for my own city that you try to rent a room in someone's home. This would be someone who had their home a while, and was not needing a whole lot of rent. If you were both "of an age" and with similar interests you might be able to assist one another. Sometimes one can drive and the other cannot, one is a good cook and the other not, one likes to garden and the other not. And etc. I wish you luck whatever you try. This a a national and I would suspect international problem. Population keeps growing and housing is in short supply.
