Is this for you or for a LO? It really depends on where you live. I find that the word "care home" is used out of the US.
If your in another country, this would be hard for anyone in the US to answer. And this forum is mostly US. If you are in the US then there are different types of "care homes"
Assisted living (AL )...these facilities are private pay. They range greatly depending where they are and what they provide. Usually for people who just need some help.
Memory Care (MC)...A step up from AL and also private pay. This facility is for those suffering from a Dementia. There are usually more aides and trained to care for Dementia patients. Sometimes ALs and MCs are in the same complex so easy transition from an AL and MC. MC will cost more.
Nursing Homes (NH), Long-term care (LTC), and Skilled Nursing (SNF) facilities are for those people who need 24/7 care. These facilities usually take Medicaid. The problem here is if they have a Medicaid bed available.
In my State if you have been in the same AL and/or MC for at least 2 years private pay, you may be able to get Medicaid to pay for your care. Meaning you have no assets and your monthly income is below the income cap.
Then there are Board and Care. I don't know much about them in cost, will they just except SS or even Medicaid? This is, though, I think the cheaper option even if private pay.
They all come down to availability and what you can afford. Filing and getting final approval for Medicaid can take 3 months at least. Once approved, then its...is a bed open in a facility.
