Since I posted this my mom slipped and fell. The fall occurred in the evening and my son heard her fall and called 911. She was brought to the local hospital where she was diagnosed with a complex fracture of her elbow and non displaced fracture of her pelvis which is stable. She is able to weight bear with some pain and the elbow is not a candidate for surgery but will be treated with a splint for 6 weeks. After 3 days in the hospital she was transferred to a rehab nursing home. She was initially very confused. I insisted they take her off narcotic pain medications as they were contributing to the confusion. She is doing better but now really requires two people to get her to the bathroom. She still wants to go home but that is an unlikely proposition given her worsening confusion and increased need for help to ambulate and do ADL. So the plan is after finishing rehab she will be transferred to an assisted care living facility near my sister. If at some point she returns to near her baseline physical and mental state and still wants to go home I would consider moving in with her and getting 24/ 7 aides. I could then coordinate her care and the burden would be off my sister.

Frederica, if M “really requires two people to get her to the bathroom”, she may not be a candidate for AL. At 98, and after these problems, she is not likely to return to what you think of as “her baseline physical and mental state”. It might help to have a Plan B, even Plan C.

Sorry to read your update. Falls are often the game changer “event” many of us experience with our parents. They are inevitable in the very old and can cause a myriad of events. I hope your mother heals well and makes good progress in therapy. Like many here who’ve walked this path, I’d advise being hopeful while also being realistic with expectations
