Ed - For the best advice contact the local Area Agency on Aging in your county. They can help you understand what's possible given your age, condition, needs and long term diagnosis. Some states DO pay a small stipend to family who remain home as care givers but, in general, the "patient" must be very dependent and have limited physical capabilities.

I would suggest that you also browse through the Money and Legal section of this site. This same question has been asked and answered in various forms there. You'll find ideas about looking into VA benefits, state benefits and long term care insurance.
