I am particularly interested in CCRCs that begin at the level of Independent Living apartments and then go up from there (i.e. Assisted Living, Memory Care, etc.). It seems a lot start with AL. I have some very specific things I want to see about but the key thing is the price. I spoke with a nice social worker a short time ago who said they start at about $4000 per month minimum. Do I just start Googling? Thank you.
(Note: I'm putting this under the topic "Assisted Living" because I couldn't find another topic that fits, i.e. Senior housing, Independent housing, etc.)
In our area we have a very good place that is not technically a CCRC but has independent, assisted living, and memory care -- just not a SNF section; but they can do rehabilitation as ordered by a doctor because they have PT, OT, and I think speech therapy available which is covered by insurance on an outpatient basis.
Don’t be too surprised if you can’t do price comparisons anonymously. You’re dealing initially with someone whose job is to fill the apartments. They’ll want your information so they can follow up with you until you make a decision. I never had anyone be pushy or anything but polite, though.
Some folks don't care for services such as A Place For Mom and consider them invasive on the amount of information they want on your financial assets profiles. HOWEVER for some they work well. My brother used such a service In Palm Springs area when his ex partner, for whom he was POA, required care and placement. He loved the fact he simply fed in the numbers and was taken around literally by car, to visit, to ask how things worked at each facility. He and his ex got so they thought it a fun way to spend the day!
There is nothing saying you have to choose a place you are shown. If there is any pesky interaction afterward one of our responders suggested that saying "Oh, he had to go on Medicaid" will keep any wolves from the door.
Or, again, google it, make some calls, take some tours and try to consider it "fun". Have a list of questions ready when you go. Best of luck.
The one thing that is darn near impossible to find is pricing unless you speak directly to the community directors themselves in an appointment.
Good luck!
