Mom is living way past what Drs thought Thanksgiving, I have wanted to get a puppy to help me cope but everyone tells me no. I am not doing well with her terminal illness after months of caring for her with the help of my brother and our local Hospice. I am so stressed out. I love the outdoors and having a dog with me, that has been not only a stress reliever for me but mostly having the companionship of a dog. Is this wrong?

FayneJane, it sounds like the people who are advising you against getting a pet at this time are doing so based on their belief of what you can handle. Certainly caring for someone with a terminal illness is highly stressful. You are thinking that having a pet would help reduce the stress and they are thinking that having yet something to take care of would add to your stress. I can see that either point of view might be correct. If you have been responsible for a dog before then you know what is involved and you should be able to decide for yourself whether this is a good time to bring one into your life.

Best wishes to you.

Thank you all for writing me, one person thinks it will be too stressful for a puppy or dog, another thinks it is too much for me to handle right now. I appreciate your answers.

I do hope you get the puppy or adopt a dog. For many reasons, caregiving being one of them; we put off getting a dog. However, last April we adopted a beagle from a local veterinary school and he is such a joy and brings so much happiness and love to our family.

Do this for you..... they truly are man's best friend. Take care.

Oh yes indeed you should get a puppy ..I have three little dogs a yorkie ,a chihuahua and a shitszu .It helps my mother to stay away from sleeping to much and she enjoy having fun with them. and it helps me from going crazy or being lonely too.having a pet around will make you feel better especially depression I would suggest that you should get a little one it keeps you on your toe for sure and fun to have around ..trust me it will make you feel less stress I am living proof and especially it helps my mother smile everyday when she see all her little critters

Get the dog! It might even help Mom. I'm getting a sweet big duffy Lab to love from an adoption center. I think I need him more than he needs rescuing.
