Visit your local senior center and ask around. Check with your own doctors office, some nurses moonlight and will charge Bout 15-20/hr to sit or assist elder in evenings or weekends. Ask at your local churches if there are retirees looking for part time work that may take an interest in being a companion.

For what it's worth, you may want to be careful about who you hire. I always went through a reputable home health agency. It cost a bit more but the people had been background checked and had a professional supervisor. There are plenty of scam artists out there who will take advantage of an old person.

I am also sold on a website care. They have people who list for anything from minimum wage to the higher priced professional rates of RNs. A companion should be $10 or less per hour.

I use care(dot)com to fine caregivers and pay $12-$15 an hour depending on what they will do, start low. If its a short time and they can bathe and transfer I pay $15, if its a long full day I will pay $12 an hour . There are churches with volunteers who love to do these visits, check with your local adult daycare also.

I would say $15-20 per hour if not more. The nursing home here charges $8000 per month so anything like $20 would be a bargain.

Shar, you may want to call adult day care places in your area. The people that work there may want to make a bit of extra money especially through the holiday season. We found someone this way at the day center Mom attends. The staff because Mom is a client are not permitted to work privately for the participants. But one of the staff knows a woman that likes to make some extra money caring for the elderly. That person charges $10.00 an hour, and if needed overnight she charges $25.00 if she is able to get some sleep. If nor then the $10.00 an hour applies.

Here in the Buffalo NY area companions/sitters run 12-15 per hour. House keepers and cooks are 20, and chauffeurs are 30 per hour. RN's would be at least 30 per hour. Visiting nurse agencies charge 200/visit.
On the other hand, Assisted Living here is 2300 per month, or about 77/day or 3.19 per hour. Minimum wage is about 8/hr.
