My mom has lived with me for 10 years and her ALZ is getting worse. She has smoked since age 13 (she's 74) and we had to switch her to e-cig a few years ago because she set the back of my house on fire. Thankfully, I was home - she was taking a nap! I'm looking into AL facilities and having trouble finding one that allows residents to smoke outside. Anyone else had this experience?

nonnie, the senior facility where my Dad had lived had an outside smoking porch which was the only place that smokers could use. Thus, in the middle of winter, one would see someone all bundled up on that porch.

Regarding the e-cig, you would need to check with the Assisted Living facility to see if such a device is allowed in a resident's room. Those e-cig chargers have been known to catch fire/explode due to the lithium-ion battery over-heating due to not following the manfacturer's instructions. I would be worry with your Mom's Alzheimer's if that is a safe item for her to have in her room.

In May I was visiting an AL in New York and they had several areas the residents could sit outside and smoke.

The assisted living and independent facilities in Florida allow it. I don’t know if nursing homes do though.

There’s only ever been an indoor clean air act passed in the state, for public places. If you purchase a place in the 55+ communities (apt/condo) you can smoke in your home or on your patio/balcony.. or outside in almost all areas.

*I’ve not experienced what you have, sorry... I just hear my mom complaining about the smoke as we walk to my car.

At the AL facility in NY residents could smoke outside away from the entrance.
