I'm in the process of getting Aid and Attendance through the VA for a full time caregiver. Does the VA pay for health insurance for the caregiver? If not what is reasonable in terms of who pays what when it comes to health insurance for caregivers? This is all new to me. Is there anything else I'm not asking that I should be when it comes to paying for caregivers? Thanks.

Has a VA social worker been assigned yet?  If so, contact her/him and raise this issue.   The VA SWs in my experience are very knowledgeable and helpful.

You can also check the VA website section on caregiving and what the VA offers.

GardenArtist,
I'm waiting for the VA Social Worker to contact me. It doesn't appear from all the questions I've been asking that I'm required to offer health insurance for any caregiver, thank God!
Now I wait to see what Mom is eligible for in benefits as a surviving spouse. Dad did serve during wartime in WWII.
I'm very fortunate to have a fabulous Veterans' administrator in my area who has helped me fill out all of the documents required in getting Aid and Attendance for my Mom. Any chance of getting any benefits would be gone without this wonderful person to assist me.

As far as I know, there is no law that says you have to provide health insurance to a caregiver. You have to employ a certain number of people before the government requires you to purchase health insurance for them. If u go thru an agency, that's their responsibility.

Individual health insurance can cost you $500 or more a month and thats just health insurance. The VA does not pay for that. You will get a set amount of money to use for the Vets/spouses care.

When u hire privately, you should deduct for taxes and SS matching the SS and send to the proper agencies. Aides are not self-employed. But, you do not offer health insurance. They pay for that themselves.
