Hi,
My mom used to have very occasional heartburn. For the past few days it seems she has it all the time. She has been taking heartburn medication and we have been giving her food that shouldn’t cause heartburn.
It is milder but that she still has heartburn. She is burping all the time. It’s not a big burp more like a hiccup.
Also, when she takes a pill she sometimes coughs it up in a tiny bit of thick phlegm. She doesn’t cough up phlegm often only very occasionally when she eats or when she takes a pill. Sometime she coughs very briefly in her sleep.
Doctor doesn’t have too many suggestions, hoping someone here can shed some light.
Thanks for your help.

Once any medical issues are ruled out or dealt with, aloe vera juice is a great heartburn reliever and has many other benefits.

What time of day does this happen? Reason I ask is I was getting heartburn almost every night. I recently stopped eating after 7pm and I rarely get heartburn anymore. So I would definitely try to see that your mom doesn't eat too much in the evening. It might help.

But as CWillie said I would rule out any possible heart problems because heartburn and burping up stuff is a real symptom especially in women.

Have her see a GI doc as MJ1929 mentioned,

She could have thrush or Candidiasis

Uhm, that sounds a lot like how I remember my mom's symptoms of angina, and just recently my sister's MIL's complaints of recurring "heartburn" turned into a full blown heart attack, I'd want to rule that out ASAP.

I have a hiatal hernia and used to suffer greatly with heartburn. The doctor that did my endoscopy of course told me that I would need to be on Prilosec for the rest of my life, but thankfully my regular doctor is a holistic doctor and he recommended that I start taking apple cider vinegar with the mother daily either in water or by itself. I happen to like vinegar, so I just take 2 serving spoons full every morning and I haven't had heartburn in so long that I can't honestly remember.
I prefer the Braggs name brand, but Whitehouse also has some with "the mother." It might be worth a try. Good luck.

FG please be careful taking vinegar straight. It can damage your esophagus. Small amount of water can prevent damage.

It is amazing how an acid alkalizes our system.

I'm assuming she isn't getting any chocolate? For me that can be a major cause, which is why I've regrettably been forced to literally give it up.

Burps are another story. I've found they can occur if I'm not sitting straight while eating. So in a way burping, or the avoidance thereof, has forced me to be more aware of posture.

Another issue could be eating too quickly and not allowing enough swallowing time inbetween.

Might be a hiatal hernia. My grandfather had chronic heartburn from that back before they had much to do about it.

Get Mom checked out by a gastrointestinal doctor.
