I'm currently at the point where I can't take care of my father and he doesn't want to help himself. He becomes aggressive with me and my brother. I can't deal with this crap any more. We currently live in the state of Ohio.

Find Care & Housing
The next time he becomes aggressive, call 911 and have him transported to the ER.

Call the social worker and ask that he be admitted as a "social admit" and placement found.

Your father has to be ruled incompetent by the courts in order to be made a ward of the state.
He has to be living in an unsafe manner and judged to be a danger to himself or others before any court will take his rights from him.

It also has to be made clear before the court that your father both 1) cannot care for himself and 2) has no one else who can/will care for him and 3) has NO POA acting for him and no guardian acting for him currently.

You should call APS to ask they open a case for your father, tell them that you cannot deal with his needs and want to request guardianship or conservatorship by the state. You can also choose instead to see an elder law attorney for options in your state to get this done.

I wish you luck and hope you'll update us.

Hello, HolyMoly

I am terribly sorry that you are in this situation.

I am not familiar with how to make your father a ward of the state. Others on the forum are familiar with this and will help you.

Stick around for answers.

If you are interested, you can contact Council on Aging for an assessment of his needs. You can ask them for suggestions or directions on what would be best for him.

If you decide to contact C on A make sure that you tell them that you are not available to be his caregivers.

Best wishes to you and your family.
