I take care of my dad. He just had a heart pump put in his heart. He does not drive so I take him to all of his appointments, and change bandages and other stuff. I love this time with him, but hard to pay bill when you miss alot of work.

Kat, the vast majority of us who are/were caregivers do not get paid.... unless our parent pays us from their own pocket. If your Dad can do that, then you would need to draw up an employment contract showing your duties, how many hours a week, and the hourly rate. Then there are payroll taxes.

Otherwise, if your Dad can apply and be accepted by Medicaid [which is different from Medicare], depending on your State programs, the State may be able to pay you a small income. Note, this is usually minimum wage, and someones only for a few hours a week. Medicaid is taxpayer funded.

I know how it is to lose time at work. I used up all my vacation days, sick days, etc. I just had to plan accordingly so I was able to do numerous things during the half day off, such as doctor appointments. For groceries, I used an on-line service which was great, that saved me a lot of time, especially since I hated grocery shopping :P
