Hospice has been telling me Fred is close to death, but calling me on a cell phone 3-4 times a day and begging me to come get him. My son and I are going to hospice facility to sign papers and call an ambulance. The hospic nurse said his insurance wont pay for any of his treatmnt or the ambulance ride. I'm so pissed off! Hospice is a scam! The cancer drs gave him 6-9 months like 2 weeks ago.

Is this a Hospice facility? I always thought Medicare does not pay for facilities but do pay for the hospice services. So the services up to this point should be paid. I would sit down with someone and make sure you understand what you or ur insurance will be responsible for. No, Medicare will not pay for an ambulance unless its an emergency. Will not pay for transporting.

I agree, home hospice may be better but the family will do most of the work. You will see a nurse and aide (for bathing) about 3x a week. The nurse will be available by phonev24/7.

I would wonder about the discrepancies. Why are you told he is close to death but then ur are called numerous times to come get him. Is it two different people telling you this. Very confusing.

Why does Fred want out of hospice? Hospice is begging you to come get him...why? Are they asking you to bring him home or to a hospital? Maybe he no longer qualifies for hospice care for some reason. A lot of unanswered q's here. Part of the problem is your not understanding what hospice services are provided and the relationship between hospice and Fred's insurance. Hospice only provides for comfort and pain free end of life treatment. It does not provide curative care. The services hospice provides are those that are related to his cancer. Any other condition such as a heart problem, asthma, infection, broken bone, etc., etc., is not covered by hospice and he would have to be admitted to a hospital for that treatment. Nor does hospice cover any pre-existing condition that Fred had prior to qualifying for hospice. I don't know what treatment he needs or why the insurance isn't covering it. Call Fred's insurance carrier for yourself to find out.

Sorry for your experience, but hospice is not a scam. I have no doubt they may vary in quality but they’ve been a huge help and blessing for many, including my family. My dad’s hospice provider made it clear from the start, and several points during the time on it, that it was within his rights to cancel their services at any time. I hope you find the care you are seeking

Does he need an ambulance, can you just put him in a car or use disability transport?
Where I live most people only are admitted to a hospice facility when death is very near, days or weeks, although some with complex needs may be there longer. Are you wanting to care for him at home or did you plan to leave him at the hospital - the hospital may treat an acute problem but won't likely admit him. Your best bet may be to switch to home hospice, you can work this out with your current provider or find a different hospice agency.

It is his right to get off hospice.

As I understand it, one cannot be on hospice AND get life saving medical treatment. It is either/or.

So firing hospice.

I do not know if there is a waiting period, a day in between?

Can you call Medicare and ask for permission to get the ambulance paid?

Hope anyway it is done, that your husband gets the best care.
Whether it be palliative care, another hospice, or a miracle cure!
