I am looking for a decent nursing home that isn't the county nursing home. She has Medicare and is barely above the limit to have Medicaid. Is there a program of any kind that helps place seniors with low income? I'm in NY State

There is something called a Miller Trust where her xtra income can be placed. When she passes, it will revert back to Medicaid. Talk to an elder lawyer well versed in Medicaid.

I would place Mom and privately pay for her care, applying for Medicaid about 3 months before she runs out. With my Mom, I applied for Medicaid in April, placed her May 1st, she paid privately May and June and Medicaid started July 1st. Paying privately spent down her assets.

You might be able to get her into a decent place if you liquidate her assets and go on private-pay until they are spent down and she can go on Medicaid. There are many nursing homes who will let a person stay if they have to go on Medicaid. There's aren't too many that will accept a person into one when they're already on Medicaid.

contact your local Medicaid office., they can tell you about other programs that may assist you. Or contact an elder law specialist they might be able to get you qualified for Medicaid.
