My father suffered a stroke five years ago, should not be alone and cannot fully take care of himself. My mother was his caregiver and she recently passed away. I have applied for the Medicaid Waiver and it's been months without results. I know that he makes too much to receive full benefits but not enough to privately pay. I have been waiting for them to get back to me for two months. Does anyone have advice on where to go from here? I am so burned out and really need someone else to take care of his daily needs so that I can visit him when I can and continue to work without interruption.

When you say that your father cannot fully take care of himself: what is he able to do?

I'm very sorry for your loss. It's a cruel thing that you not only lose your mother, but you're then left with the fall-out of caring for your father. Hugs to you.

You need to contact Area on Aging and/or then contact a state social worker. I've been in a similar situation, there is no easy solution. Not enough money to hire help, and unable to be full time caregiver due to work responsibilities. You may be best off calling someone from the state level (APS) to let them know your father needs help, maybe they can help get the ball rolling on the Medicaid and find proper support or placement for him.

Does he have savings so that he could self pay while paperwork is processed? Have you started looking at facilities. Have you met with a social worker at a facility? They can help you with the application process.

Call the Area Agency on Aging to do an assessment of his needs. They can also assist with recommendations of facilities that can work with dad's needs. Always a good idea to have expert information.
