Despite treatments she experiences no relief.

Consider the laundry products. Did this start when she moved into the NH? She may be allergic to the laundry soaps, detergents, or fabric softeners being used; she could be sensitive to bleach, or to dyes or fragrances in the products. Are the sheets soft or stiff? Is her clothing being laundered in products that are new to her? Are they being thoroughly rinsed? I suggest these things because I am myself very sensitive to chemical substances in my clothing, and also to shower products, lotions, deodorants and such. My heart goes out to her, it's a misery!

Rather than treat the symptom, do a little detective work and try to determine the cause. Good luck and best wishes!

Good answer. My sister was also allergic to detergents. Tide for one. When in the hospital, she had to have sterile sheets.

I would look into the meds. I had this trouble with Luz and when one of the meds was stopped the itching was reduced by about 85%. That med was hydalazine(sp) in tablet form and taken routinely. Now it is only used when needed and is injected.
Rather it was until hosp;ice came into our lives.

Lavender, look up psychogenic itching. I agree that it might be a side effect of other meds, but there are times when antidepressants give relief for this.

If this is new, I would check on any change of Meds.

Do you know what is causing the itching?

Very dry skin can cause itchy skin and Gold Bond "heeling" lotion works great. Meds can cause itching. A warm bath with baking soda works, but I doubt if NH has tubs...or maybe they do?!

Hopifully someone else will have more answers for you.
