A good friend was recently diagnosed with liver cancer and on top of it is managing dialysis for recent kidney issues; she doesn't have much family available to help at home during the day, and insurance is refusing to cover her for nursing home care while she tries to gain strength for cancer treatment, so I and the three other close friends who are trying to help her coordinate her care could use some objective professional help evaluating and deciding on options. Wondering if there are any good for-fee resources with expertise in that regard? The social workers in the hospital tend not to be very experienced, and are acting in the hospital's interest, and besides that we'd be looking for more of a generalist who understands the NYS health care options on a bigger scale, if such advisors even exist... any ideas appreciated.

Find Care & Housing
That should say "contract" agencies.

In NYC, there are contact agencies that act as the Area Agency on Aging. I think you can call 311 and find out what Agency covers your friends zip code. It can be Catholic Charities, JASA, etc.

What you friend needs is called Case Management.

Because there may be long wait lists, she could hire a Geriatric Care Manager If you Google that term and her Borough, you will find folks who do case management. Most are retired RNs or Social Workers.
